If you’re ordering a new vehicle and already know a color-change wrap is in its future, there’s a surprisingly important decision to make before it ever reaches the wrap shop: choose black if you can.
Black is arguably the best factory color to start with when planning a full color change in vinyl or colored paint protection film (PPF). Even with an extremely thorough installation, small areas of the original paint can remain visible around door jambs, panel gaps, hinges, handles and other difficult transitions. When the underlying vehicle is black, those areas tend to disappear naturally into shadows and body lines.
White, red and other high-contrast colors can be much less forgiving. Wrap a white vehicle dark green, for example, and even a tiny exposed edge can create a noticeable white line. The same problem can occur with red, bright blue or virtually any factory color that clashes with the new finish. Those vehicles can absolutely be wrapped beautifully, but achieving the same visual transformation may require additional disassembly, more material, more installation time or wrapping areas that might otherwise be unnecessary.
Fewer Factory Colors. More Personalization.
Tesla is a great example of a larger automotive trend. Its current palette is relatively limited, with colors such as Pearl White, black, Stealth Grey, Deep Blue Metallic, Ultra Red and several newer specialty shades depending on model and availability.
Meanwhile, consumers increasingly expect the products they buy to feel personal. We customize our phones, shoes, homes and countless other parts of everyday life. Why should one of our largest purchases be limited to a handful of factory colors?
Vinyl and colored PPF effectively turn the factory paint into a starting point rather than the final decision. Satin finishes, frozen metallics, sophisticated earth tones, bold colors and combinations unavailable from the manufacturer can completely change the personality of a vehicle.
So, if you’re ordering your next car and already know you want something different, consider selecting black from the factory.
Think of it as ordering the blank canvas. Then choose the color you actually wanted.
